Core or Satellite? Are alts a base or an extension for your portfolio?

The ideas of ‘hub & spoke’ or ‘core & explore’ usually denotes traditional investments as a base and then alternatives as a diversifier or ‘extra’ allocation – but what if alts are the portfolio foundation and traditional assets (if any!) are the diversifiers. Correlations of alts to traditional option is typically low and alt strategies and assets to each other is also low – so why not use them as the 80%-90% ‘core’ and then diversify by adding beta via traditional assets?

Private Investments for Everyone?

A great deal of progress has occurred in creating platforms and the regulatory infrastructure to provide private investments (hitherto accessible only by those deemed wealthy enough to take on the ‘risk’ attributed to these investments). As institutional investors have been seen to make great gains in private assets such as PE, private lending, and infrastructure, the idea of restricting access to all other investors (who are not in defined benefit pensions) has been derided as ‘undemocratic’, adding supply and demand pressures to these asset classes. This panel will explain where we are in this evolution of markets and what to expect in the next short while.

Lunch & Keynote: Building Value Through Responsible Investing: Strengthening the LP GP Partnership

Keynote will begin at 12:30PM

Nap of the Earth: Getting into the nitty-gritty of today’s real estate market

Real estate underpins the net worth of virtually every investor: if they are ‘smaller’ retail investors then one’s principal residence is likely their largest asset and liability but it has the benefit of providing shelter. If mass affluent or wealthier, these assets take on a more investment-like place in one’s mind and balance sheet – they need to perform to create positive wealth creation over many years. This panel will look into how specific real estate markets are positioned to provide this to investors; as well as the risks of certain markets.

Pension plans’ models of governance and operating have evolved a great deal over the last 20 years as plan sponsors around the world have embraced, in many cases, new ways to manage that assets set aside to provide retirement income for millions of beneficiaries globally and the latest iteration, and one that is growing like wildfire is that of pensions working together to optimize their operational performance while managing inherent risks, such as counterparty risk, in their everyday transactions. This talk will describe how plans’ strategies have met modern challenges as well as introduce viewers to the Global Peer Financing Association (GPFA) which now counts among its membership some of the largest plans in the world, totalling more than $7 trillion in assets. This is your opportunity to get acquainted with this growing association and its far-reaching mandate to improve efficiencies of its members.

Case Study: Adding Alternatives to Client Portfolios

Alternative investments are increasingly becoming a core component of client portfolios, yet the path to incorporating them is rarely straightforward. Advisors must navigate product selection, due diligence requirements, portfolio construction considerations, and client communication when introducing alternatives alongside traditional assets.

In this NowTalk session, experienced wealth advisors will walk through a real-world case study on how alternatives are evaluated and incorporated into client portfolios. The discussion will explore how advisors determine the role of alternatives within portfolio construction, assess managers and structures, and communicate these strategies effectively to clients. Attendees will gain practical insights into the opportunities and challenges of integrating alternative investments into modern wealth management practices.

Lunch Keynote – The State of Advice in Canada: Is the Industry Built for the Future?

The Canadian wealth management industry is facing a period of profound change. Advisors are expected to navigate a rapidly expanding universe of investment products, growing regulatory scrutiny, and clients who increasingly demand access to private markets and alternative strategies.

Yet many of the structures that define the advice industry today were built decades ago. Compensation models, product distribution systems, and due diligence processes are being challenged as the investment landscape becomes more complex and investor expectations continue to evolve.

Drawing on over two decades of experience as an advisor, portfolio manager, chief investment analyst, and consultant, Jesse Kaufman will offer a candid and sometimes contrarian perspective on the Canadian advice industry. From misaligned incentives and product proliferation to the realities of portfolio construction in today’s markets, this keynote will explore whether the advisory profession is evolving fast enough and what the future of advice in Canada may ultimately look like.

The Evolving Shelf: How Access Is Changing

The product shelf available to wealth advisors continues to evolve as access to private markets and alternative strategies expands. Head offices and investment advisors must now evaluate a growing range of structures designed to simplify access to historically difficult-to-reach managers and strategies.

This panel will explore how firms are assessing newer product formats, including evergreen funds and fund-of-fund structures that provide exposure to top-tier managers through simplified subscription and one-trade processing. Panelists will discuss how these vehicles are being reviewed from a platform perspective, how they fit within advisor workflows, and what role they may play as private market access becomes an increasingly important part of client portfolios.

Manager Perspectives: Building Alternative Strategies for Today’s Market

As demand for alternative investments continues to grow, asset managers are evolving how they design, structure, and deliver strategies to the wealth management channel. From liquid alternatives to private market vehicles, manufacturers must balance innovation, accessibility, and operational simplicity for advisors and their clients.

This panel brings together leaders from diverse firms to discuss how alternative strategies are being developed for today’s marketplace. Panelists will share how their firms approach portfolio construction, product structure, and distribution within the Canadian wealth channel, while offering their perspective on where demand for alternatives is heading and how managers are adapting to meet it.

Single Family Office Roundtable (Relatives Only)

Life as the principal of a family office can be exciting, inspirational, and busy, while at the same time worrisome, stressful, and draining.  We provide this (strictly!) family members only session as an opportunity to meet with your peers and share questions, concerns, solutions, and insights across the table. We have nominated three leaders/instigators to get things going and guarantee that all will find the evening illuminating and fun.

Capacity is limited to 20 SFO Relatives this year.

SFO Relatives Instigators (3 total):
Robert Montgomery, First Maximillian Associates
Craig D’Cruze, Inverted Ventures
Shael Soberano, Sharno Group

3:00 pm

Single Family Office Roundtables (Professionals Only)

Working in a single family office is not your typical investment management job – you gain the benefit of a sometimes extremely flat organizational structure and many find the spectrum of duties and tasks to be (very) intellectually stimulating. On the other hand, it can be isolating and difficult to keep up with the pace of work: each family has its own dynamic and cadence so we created this dinner where (strictly!) full time employees (not relatives) of SFOs can interact with their peers to get the most out of their roles.

This year we have a bumper crop of SFO Pros, so we will have 2 rooms of up to 20.

Scott Morrison, Wealhouse Asset Management
Tec Han, Vibrato Capital LLC

Operating Company vs. Portfolio Investments

Family offices come in two basic flavours: ones that continue to hold the operating company that founded it, and ones that are holding other, portfolio, investments subsequent to the sale. Each one has a distinct dynamic based on the legacy investment, relationships, and relationships to the legacy investment. This panel will discuss the pros and cons of having this ‘founding asset’ on the books throughout successive generations vs. a situation where the investment mix is that of a newer, usually more diversified sort.  It features three stages of this situation: a family office with its operating company, one transitioning to portfolio investments, and one that has done so for some time.  A truly singular experience for our audience!

There’s nothing like the focus afforded a new venture – plus the commensurate risk of ruin that might come to pass if the company is not run well or simply doesn’t achieve the scale required to continue as a going concern. This panel will impart practical wisdom from three single family offices who invest in more start-up and emerging managers – great information for managers and investors alike.

New Thinking About Commodities: Paths to profit

Inflation and the price of everything has been in the news a great deal for the last many month – or even decades! – as investors have taken note of how asset values can exceed even the most wild predictions. As well, price crashes occur from time to time in all assets; an inevitable consequence of over-valuation and a phenomenon not unique to today’s markets: prices have peaked and troughed for time immemorial. This panel will put forth tangible investment ideas that one can use to make the most of both manic and depressed markets as well as a frame of reference for knowing which phase one might be in.

The Power of Quant: Harnessing data for returns

Hedge funds (aka alternative strategies) have, at their core, mathematical principals such as correlation (shorting reduces a portfolio’s correlation and many strategies have low correlations between each other and among their constituent managers) and optionality (either the trades or instruments employed can produce an advantageous payoff formula). With advances in computational power, many (perhaps all) managers are employing quantitative methods to source trades, model their behaviour in various markets, entering and exiting trades, monitoring risk, and enhancing their understanding of the markets overall. This panel will discuss all this and more!

Emerging Markets as an Investment Destination

Prior to the turn of the century, emerging markets were the darling of investor portfolios – their potential was unmatched, access was becoming easier, and corporate governance seemed to be (finally) getting up to where investors expected.  The deluge of cash into these markets pushed them to stratospheric levels and the subsequent crashes in the late 1990s were the stuff of legend.  Investors, once (more) burned turned to TMT for their high-octane fix (with perhaps anticipated results).

Over the last couple of decades, the trends which had begun back then have taken hold in many countries – this provides opportunity to invest with the potential to make money for investors thanks to persistent inefficiencies in some markets that can continue to be exploited.  Learn about these benefits during this panel!

Lunch & Keynote: Being Direct (Speaking begins at 1:00)

Family offices have a multitude of investment opportunities via various vehicles and structures: funds, FoFs, direct, SMAs, and joint ventures to name a few.  This fireside will focus on direct investments and how one family office is managing their deal sourcing, transaction process, operational oversight and maintenance, and divesture of a number of situations over the years. Joined by a multi-family office with a dedicated Direct Investment Program, they will speak to how families make use of these types of programs and take a holistic look at managing one’s portfolio – along with constraints that may be present based on the family’s composition. (E.g., having less or more of a leaning toward direct investments and/or certain market sectors based on where they made their money or continue to have legacy assets and expertise.)

This is a rare glimpse at how these speakers make the most of directs and a great opportunity to add your question to the mix!

The world of Family Offices is unique. Stonehage Fleming – the multi family office with over 150 years’ experience in supporting families all over the world – undertakes regular research with the families that it serves based on the theme ‘wealth strategies for intergenerational success’. They published their latest report in 2023 with the premise that families and wealth creators should focus on the stewardship of not only their financial capital, but also of their social, cultural and intellectual capital – the Four Pillars of Capital. In the firm’s experience, each pillar is equally important to the successful transition of wealth and reputation and the creation of an impactful legacy.

Fireside: Canada’s Crypto Crossroads: Regulation, Adoption & the Road Ahead

Join us for a fireside chat with Jeffery Sun, Head of Research at Alphemy Capital, previously at a Canadian Pension, and Lucas Matheson, CEO of Coinbase Canada, where we’ll dive into the dynamic world of cryptocurrency in Canada. This conversation will explore the current state of crypto regulation, highlighting recent developments and the clarity needed to foster innovation. We’ll discuss the evolving crypto landscape in Canada and the critical next steps for government adoption of blockchain technology to drive economic growth. The chat will also cover the shift in crypto’s perception—from speculative asset to a legitimate investment class—and the rising demand for diversified crypto portfolios among Canadian investors.

Jeffery Sun, Alphemy Capital
Lucas Matheson, Coinbase Canada

Watershed Moment: Cryptocurrency funds on equal footing

It seems that every asset class, including private equity, venture capital, and infrastructure – as well as alternative trading strategies such as those employed by hedge funds – is finding its way into retail portfolios. Recent legislation from the CSA (Canadian Securities Administrators – or overarching body of Canadian securities regulators) has been issued that enhances ‘alternative mutual funds’ (aka ‘liquid alts funds’) to invest in crypto assets. This allows the $60B+ in liquid alts funds to be invested in all types of equities, fixed income, derivatives and (now) crypto assets. This panel will explain the reasoning behind this watershed moment and what it means for investors.

Beyond Bitcoin: Portfolio construction in today’s world

Digital assets have progressed past just Bitcoin (there were others prior, but none achieved much traction) to include so-called altcoins – whether you define those as Ethereum and all the other coins, all coins except Ethereum, or all coins other than ETH, XRP, SOL and a few OGs.

Pascal St-Jean, 3iQ

3:45 pm

A Brave New World (with Brave Investors): Allocating to digital assets

Whether one is an asset-owner or an asset allocator, taking a position in a new asset class or investment idea/security can be harrowing. Failing conventionally is a career non-destruction tactic – moreso than succeeding unconventionally might be a career advancer. Thus, when a move is made it is after a great deal of thought about not only the opportunity but also the potential downside. For pensions and more public investors (such as MFOs) this can include reputation risk and at SFOs it’s either one’s family money or the money of one’s employer – either way, a misstep might not be widely known, but it has consequences.

Stablecoins at a Crossroads: The Global Ripple Effects of the U.S. GENIUS Act

With the recent passage of the GENIUS Act in the United States, stablecoins are entering a new regulatory era, one that could reshape the global digital asset ecosystem. This session will unpack the implications of the Act for issuers, investors, and regulators both in the U.S. and abroad. Lois will discuss how Canadian and global markets may adapt, whether opportunities for innovation will expand or contract, and how family offices and asset managers can position themselves in light of these changes.

CAASA Alternative Perspectives – 2021

Overview

Positioned opposite our CAASA Annual Conference, these days are built for institutional investors and all others as we showcase the talent of alternative managers in our usual, carefully-thought & curated fashion. This will be replete with firesides, NowTalks, panels, and special sessions for all. 1:1 meetings and table talks allow for connection and discussion via the CAASA All-in-One Digital Platform

High Touch & 100% Virtual

We believe that people attend conferences for many reasons: great panels, lively discussions, meet new & old friends, and in many cases some super food and after-hours bonding. Sadly, only the first reason is delivered by many online conferences and the last two are just not feasible in COVID-land. We designed this and many other large-scale conferences in 2020 and beyond to harness technology to serve our delegates’ needs. With no minimum number of webinars, small group discussions, or 1:1 meetings, all delegates can get what they want without travel or possible harm to their health. We encourage you to take a tour of our platform, which we have used for 5 years – now with video, and get to know this new normal to maximize your conference experience same as you might in real life!

CAASA CE Centre

The content for this platform comes from CAASA webinars and podcast as well as panel sessions from a selection of our conferences.

In addition, certain members of CAASA have provided their webinars and podcast for inclusion.

Topics and investment opportunities featured in these courses focus on alternative investments such as hedge funds, liquid alternatives, private equity, private lending, real estate, infrastructure, cryptocurrency, venture capital, and other Alternative assets and strategies.

To Short, or Not To Short?

The universe of investment options in Canadian equity funds is dominated by long-only strategies that employ various techniques to value and trade stocks, and use shorting to deliver value to their investors. Does stock-picking suffice to produce excellent portfolios, and – if so – what are the best techniques to use? This panel will delve into how a selection of managers might short (or not), why they do it (or not), and how those who do short express their views (e.g., cash borrow or various derivatives strategies) and manage the unique risks that shorting can pose.

More than two years ago, Clocktower penned a piece entitled “China’s Three Traps & Macro Trilemma” detailing the geographical, demographic, and middle-income traps that plague China, as well as is macro trilemma of a highly leveraged private sector, assertive geopolitical aims, and having a manufacturing-led economy. This talk will re-visit this paper (available here: https://www.clocktowergroup.com/research-insights/chinasthreetrapsmacrotrilemma) and provide as update and possibly new prognosis.

Investors Allocating to Alts

Alternatives are finally seen as less…alternative – and more a must-have for portfolios that seek high risk-adjusted returns as well as those who simply want to have an opportunity to either (i) have higher overall returns, or (ii) lower volatility and shallower troughs, both due to the benefits of low-correlation assets.  But how are real investors looking at their portfolio and finding alternatives to fill the gap? This panel will give the audience an glimpse into how many types of investors source, diligence, and size their allocations to alternative strategies & assets.

Institutional-Grade Venture

If there is one area on investing that is even more steeped in intrigue and assumed insider information (of the legal sort) than private equity, it is venture investing. Many fund managers/venture capitalists claim to have special relationships, insights, or processes that allow them to access ‘the best deals’ and fund ‘the best founders’; still others provide access to ‘the best funds’. Investors in this space are offered a myriad of options, yet determining the efficacy of a manager/VC is not straight-forward. These panelists will share what they see in the horizon and what investors need to know before investing in the space.

11:45 am

Real Estate at the Crossroads

Long-hailed as a truly long-term investment portfolio component that can help ameliorate the effects of inflation (thanks to its ability to increase in price as well as increase rents during times of higher prices), real estate can get investors into trouble in times of rising interest rates. Cap(italization) rates take time to adjust to higher prices, and this can put real estate yields in an unfavourable light compared to more liquid options such as government and corporate bonds – leading to a lower price sought by buyers. Investor stress might also be heightened as valuations might fall (as just described) and/or monthly debt-servicing payments increase along with rising borrowing rate. Where is the market now? Hear from this learned and experienced panel to find out!

NowTalk – Digging out from Under-Funding

Under-funding of pensions is a well-worn weakness of many plans that have over-promised in terms of benefits or investment returns. This has reached perhaps nightmarish proportions as some plans are distributing to retirees up to 12% of their assets each year – and the trend is for this to accelerate vs. ameliorate. Our speaker will give a briefing on the PBGC (Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation) which is tasked with ensuring that these pensions are funded and provide for the millions of beneficiaries that have or will come to rely on their payments to meet their needs.

Guy Pinkman, Presidential Appointee, PBGC Advisory Committee at Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation and Trustee, City of Lincoln Nebraska Police & Fire Pension

An Industry in Flux: Credit and Lending Markets & Investments

Investors have witnessed the multi-decade and inexorable descent of interest rates snap back in violent fashion over the last year or so. Many say they saw it coming, since inflation (brought on by money-printing) was undoubtedly going to require central banks to raise rates, but how many positioned their portfolios to account for this eventuality and how did they fare? This panel will discuss how investors and managers fared, why their returns were what they were, and what investors can do now to prepare for the next leg of the credit cycle.

On the other hand, it can be isolating and difficult to keep up with the pace of work: each family has its own dynamic and cadence so we created this dinner where (strictly!) full time employees (not relatives) of SFOs can interact with their peers to get the most out of their roles.

Drawing on their framework for building “antifragile” families, the session explores how communication, shared purpose, and family narrative strengthen long-term family resilience.

SFO Break Out 1C- How Private Equity Is Evolving: Where Are Families Leaning Today?

With the growth of secondaries, continuation vehicles, and more flexible private market structures, the traditional PE/VC model is being re-evaluated. This session will explore whether family offices are still allocating to blind pool funds in the same way, or shifting toward secondaries, co-investments, and other structures that offer greater visibility and liquidity. Participants will share how their approach to private equity is evolving, and where they are finding the most compelling opportunities today.

This session will explore how SFOs pace commitments, manage capital calls, and maintain sufficient reserves, while also addressing difficult decisions around underperforming managers. Participants will discuss how liquidity pressures influence manager evaluation, and how families approach holding, reducing, or exiting relationships during periods of stress or opportunity.

The Professionalization of Family Office Private Markets Investing

As family offices mature, many are transitioning from opportunistic, entrepreneur-led direct investing toward more structured, institutional-grade private markets programs. This session explores the structural and governance considerations required to build a scalable and sustainable private markets portfolio. Topics include diversification across vintages, strategies, and sectors, balancing direct investments with fund exposure, managing liquidity risk, and avoiding common portfolio construction pitfalls. Attendees will gain perspectives on how professional investors approach private markets and how family offices can adapt these principles and benefit from an allocation to private capital, through building portfolios designed to sustain and grow wealth across generations.

Tough Questions on Evergreens

Old school private equity, venture, and real estate LPs and GPs can remember when there was one way to gain access to these asset classes: closed-end funds with lives extending 10 years or longer without the possibility of liquidity except in the most extreme (and potentially capital-damaging) of instances. Today’s investors are interested in something different: access to private markets on a continual basis with the benefit of contemporaneous pricing information (ostensibly for risk management regimes) and without the drawbacks of closed-end funds (ramp-up investment period, uncertain cashflows, and overall inefficient capital deployment). This panel will compare the two for LPs in the room.

Legacy and Learning: Philanthropy Across Generations

Families of means often develop an urge to give back to the society that enabled their success, while also instilling in their kin a sense of togetherness that helps them feel connected to one another and to the world at large. Whether through ad hoc giving initiatives, a shared family commitment, or a formal foundation, philanthropy can meet the giving goals of individual family members as well as the family as a whole.

Of course, this can only occur with open communication. Our panel of family members and single family office professionals will speak to how their families approach philanthropy and deliver meaningful support to those in need.

The Next Phase of Private Credit: Navigating Risk and Global Uncertainty

Lunch Keynote featuring Earl Hunt, Apollo

Private credit has grown into a multi-trillion-dollar market as institutional investors step in to fill the lending gap left by banks. But as the asset class matures, rising defaults, tighter financial conditions, and geopolitical uncertainty are beginning to test the resilience of the market.

In this keynote, Earl Hunt will share his perspective on the evolving private credit landscape. Drawing on Apollo’s global platform, he will discuss where the most compelling opportunities exist today, how disciplined lenders are navigating risk, and why the next phase of the credit cycle may create both challenges and attractive entry points for long-term investors.

Defining Success: The Many Dimensions of a Family Office Mandate

For single family offices, success is rarely defined by financial returns alone. Each family brings its own priorities, whether generating income to support future generations, preserving and compounding wealth, or pursuing broader objectives such as philanthropy, impact, and legacy.

In this panel, family office principals will discuss how their families define and measure success across financial and non-financial dimensions. The conversation will explore balancing long-term wealth creation with lifestyle needs, aligning family members across generations, and using capital to create impact and reputation beyond the portfolio. Attendees will gain insight into the diverse ways families think about purpose, legacy, and what it truly means for a family office to succeed.

Inside the Family Portfolio

Asset allocation sits at the heart of every investment program and is often cited as the primary driver of long-term returns. For family offices, however, portfolio construction often looks very different from traditional models, with meaningful allocations to private markets and other alternatives.

A family’s portfolio frequently reflects its broader circumstances and philosophy: whether capital comes from an operating business, a preference for direct investments versus funds, tolerance for illiquidity, or a bias toward domestic versus global opportunities. In this session, our panelists will share how they think about asset allocation in practice and the role alternatives play within their portfolios.

Builder & Steward: The Founder & CEO Dynamic Inside a Modern Family Office

This keynote offers a rare, candid look at the relationship between a wealth creator and the professional entrusted to steward and scale that legacy. Featuring Miles Nadal alongside Trevor (President & CEO, Peerage), the discussion will explore how founder vision and institutional discipline come together in practice.

While Miles remains at the center of the story, the conversation is intentionally structured to reveal the operating dynamic between family and executive: how decisions are made, how roles are defined, where lines are drawn, and where they are deliberately blurred.

Together, they will share how they have built trust, aligned on strategy, and evolved their partnership over time. The session will surface practical insights on governance, communication rhythms, capital allocation, and navigating moments of tension or transition.

For family members and professionals alike, this is a behind-the-scenes view into what an effective founder & CEO partnership looks like, and the lessons learned in building one that endures.
