Overview

Thank you to our start-up members who have submitted their information.

THE SUBMISSION WINDOW IS NOW CLOSED.

Start-up founders are invited to submit their business plan, intro deck, video overview, and any other media for this afternoon event at the offices of Highline Beta.  We organize two of these events each year.

Our process is we send the idea/company media to the angels/family offices & venture capitalists that are registered for our SuperWeek23, along with a ranking form.  On the day, we have two, 30-minute interview sessions where the matched start-ups and investors meet + a panel discussion and networking reception.

We invite all start-up founders to apply.  Our investors each have unique requirements and preferences; pre-seed, seed, series A (and so on…); all industries including AgTech, RegTech, PropTech, Cryptoassets…all areas of endeavor; whether having an active raise or simply looking for exposure for the next raise.

We typically have 10 start-ups and all presentations are in person and capacity for this event is approximately that number.  All start-ups are responsible for their travel expenses.

Insurance-Linked Securities – Uber-Diversifiers

Investors are constantly seeking assets and strategies that can reduce volatility in most scenarios and market regimes – especially if their asset base is intended to provide income over the short to moderate term (e.g., mature DB plans and endowments) since volatility is more a friend of accumulation plans. Insurance-Linked Securities (or ILSs) have very few connections to the vagaries of the capital markets, making them well-proven diversifiers. This panel will discuss their efficacy in a portfolio, the various types that can be employed, and how investors should perform diligence on the options presented.

Michael Nicks, Pepperdine University Endowment
John Butler, Cohen & Co.
Eugene Dimitriou, Farsight Partners
Ben Fox, Members Capital Management

9:15 am

Opportunities & Challenges in Real Estate & Infrastructure

Tremendous returns have been made in real estate and infrastructure for many investors over the last many decades – and some would say that this area provides the best opportunity going forward for virtually all investors and especially those whose time horizon is appropriately long.  This panel will provide insight into opportunities that might fit many investor portfolios as well as the challenges that might present themselves when investing in them and other similar securities/offerings.

John Davitsky, Golden Hawk Financial & Goldenhawk Real Estate Advisors
Sandy Polkar,
 Firm Capital Corporation
Aleks Karamarkovic, Graywood Developments

10:00 am

Table Talks

Your opportunity to join a table and discuss the topic on offer, lead by one of our sponsoring CAASA members.

Please move to a second topic/table at 10:30am to allow a spot to another attendee for the latter half of this session.

11:00 am

Rates, Recession, and Recoveries: How three Rs affect private credit

Private credit has grown from a cottage industry providing a link between off-market investors and borrowers to being integral parts of some of the largest financial supermarkets/platforms on the planet.  As more capital has flowed to this previous backwater, participants’ (borrowers, lenders, and investors/LPs) sophistication has increase commensurately in many cases.  As such, macro-economic factors such as the health of the economy can lead to macro-prudential issues: rising rates siphons money from the borrowers (since most are floating rate notes), a recession can crimp revenues and profitability, and recoveries (which have been robust but might be worsened by the aforementioned) might hamper returns to investors. This panel will test the efficacy of private lending portfolios in today’s economy.

Keynote Fireside: Families’ Use of Private Market Investments

Keynote will begin at 12:15PM

Family offices are not only quiet, they also don’t stand still for long. Even upon establishment, the purpose of these entities might remain the same, but how it achieves its goals can evolve over time. Asset mix, use of internal and external resources, and the composition of personnel put to the task (such as family members vs number of ‘hired guns’) will vary over time as efficacy and cost constraints fluctuate. This panel features two veterans of the business – both with their unique perspectives on family offices and how they use private market opportunities to fulfill their individual mandates.

Trevor Maunder, Peerage Capital
Nancy Bertrand, Citi Private Bank

1:00 pm

One-on-one meetings & Refresher

Or one might call it ‘recess’ – a time where all attendees can meet with whomever they like (possibly facilitated by the conference app).  CAASA staff are on hand to help folks find one another, but should not be relied upon to ‘book up one’s day’ or provide concierge service at the conference – but we are happy to help members meet/identify folks on an ad hoc basis.

2:00 pm

Have Secondaries Lost their Lustre?

Every once in a while an idea gains great traction and it’s only a matter of time before a segment of the population calls it ‘a bubble’ or ‘ripe for a fall’ – but in a number of cases it is a secular and persistent change that led to its adoption. Have Secondaries, which have been an investor darling for years because of their instant vintage diversification, portfolio approach, and potentially well-priced entry points, reached their zenith? This panel will talk to where these investments will go from here.

Nima Sanajian, Wealthsimple
Giovanni Fracchia, LGT Capital Partners
Ben Keen, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP

2:30 pm

Portfolio Snapshots of Three Allocators

Where is the ‘smart money’? Each investor has its own asset mix, set of liabilities and investment requirements, and level of sophistication. In this panel, all will hear from three allocators who have various levels to private market exposure in their portfolios – their reasons for privates, how they source transactions or fund managers, and where they see the sector headed for the balance of the 2020s. This should be an entertaining view of the alts and private markets landscape!

Rooting out Value: The why and how of farmland

Perhaps the world’s oldest investment, farmland has proved to be a winner for generations of landed gentry, hard-scrambling pioneers/sod-busters, and today’s family farms.  They were the focus of many documentaries and movies in the 1970s when inflation reared its head in earnest last but have been eclipsed by other investments like commodities, condos, and cryptocurrencies of late.  Is farmland the next leader in an inflation-hedged portfolio?  And if so, how can investors make the most of this exposure?  This panel will brief everyone on this and offer a way forward to invest in the space.

Origin Story of Blockchain/BTC/Crypto

Ever wonder where crypto/digital assets came from? Why was it invented and has it fulfilled its purpose – or will it? These questions and more are covered in this session which delves deep into the origin story of digital assets and gives a peek as to where it might be headed.

Shaun Cumby, Arxnovum Investments Inc.
Kerem Kolcuoglu, Penrose Partners
Koleya Karringten, Canadian Blockchain Consortium

10:00 am

Use cases of Tokens/Coins (ETH)

Many believe that all coins/tokens/digital assets are cryptocurrencies, but while Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency (and even that is up for debate from some), other digital assets such as Ethereum (or Ether, or ETH) are more new-fangled, distributed computers that can have many uses. This talk will set things straight in the audience’s minds and set the stage for the next level of learning.

Kerem Kolcuoglu, Penrose Partners
Russell Starr, Valour
Jonathan Han, VirgoCX Wealth

11:00 am

Custody & Staking

An investor’s most important question (above risk/volatility and even return) is ‘where is my money?’…aka return of capital. In the digital assets world, ownership is established on the blockchain, but translating this to the TradFi (Traditional Finance) world can be a challenge. Thankfully, we have a panel that will ameliorate this situation and help attendees get comfortable with digital assets custody.

Crypto Regulatory Battles – Here are Your Winners

Following on from custody, regulation is a big deal in any industry and those (who are progressive) in the digital assets space are quickly getting up the curve on regulations – just as regulators are educating themselves about these new assets. This is your opportunity to hear the stories of how key players in the industry have made great strides in bridging the gap and received approval for their products/services.

Lisa Durnford, Wealthsimple Crypto
Didier Lavallee, Tetra Trust Company

Partnership in digital assets: How institutional managers collaborate with a regulated custodian

Learn how an institutional wealth manager can partner with a regulated trading and custody provider to offer digital asset solutions to their clients. Listen to how technology, innovation and agile thinking can open new thinking and opportunities for institutional money managers in the digital assets space.

Paul Stapleton, Fidelity Clearing Canada

3:00 pm

NFT & The Metaverse

Highlighting the speed of change in the industry, last year’s Bootcamp only touched on NFTs and we had our first speaker on the Metaverse – and now both of these are much more mainstream. Many struggle with what these innovations could possibly mean for their businesses and personal/consumer life and this session is designed to answer those questions and more!

Breakfast Keynote

The transition from TradFi to the digital assets world is difficult for some, but for others it’s seen as more of a brand-new area to apply their experience and expertise to a fledgling industry. This can create conditions ripe for profit exploitation as well as the opportunity to work with regulators to create, rather than the trial and error that might have happened in TradFi over the last many years, legislation that fits the industry best – and from the start. Hear from someone who has gone from the pinnacle of financial services to a leading role in digital assets and learn where both industries are headed.

Zoe Cruz, Menai Financial Group
Koleya Karringten, Canadian Blockchain Consortium

9:30 am

PE/VC – Allocating in Today’s Market

For years, private equity investors have been chanting the mantra of ‘dry powder’ and ‘sky-high valuations’ while venture investors have been echoing the latter, but with a more invested portfolio (save cash earmarked for follow-ons). Now that some of the wind has been knocked out of a few markets, is this a good time to invest? Most know the inherent and unassailable benefits of vintage diversification in privates, but what are the macro trends that might propel this year’s crop of PE and VC transactions into the plus (or plus-plus!) column when one looks back on them in 5-10 years time?

2022 has been a busy year thus far – and it’s not over yet! Digital Assets – a serious asset class

Savvas Michael Mallas is a Partner for Family Office at Stonehage Fleming, one of the largest independent multi-family offices in the world. He heads up the firms Digital Asset Offering, supporting clients around the world who wish to introduce digital assets into their personal and fiduciary structures.

He shares his insights into the examples of the risk based approach which he has supported clients in approaching the asset class, and treating digital assets as any other asset, with the same discipline towards risk. In doing so he has been able to support clients in investing in so many different kinds of digital assets from blockchain, NFTs, early stage tokens and funds.

Savvas Mallas, Stonehage Fleming

4:45 pm

Institutions Allocating to Crypto

Everyone is doing it, but no one is talking about it…or is it the other way ’round? Crypto has been a salacious subject of late as the cryptocurrencies/tokens have dropped in price and some rather high-profile bankruptcies have plagued the headlines; adding even more trepidation for investors who might see its adoption and perhaps eventual domination of their portfolio/thinking. No matter the motivation, crypto has become (for some) a four letter word, even for true adherents who value its investment case almost as much as they value their role in the organization; and for naysayers, these ‘fluctuations’ have seemingly proved their earlier points. This talk will centre around how investors are wading through the bad news and making up their minds on allocations to these assets going forward.

Which stage of the economy and how this affects private equity (and the associated de-coupling that can occur) will also be discussed (paper of one of the participants here) as well as where and how they are positioning their portfolios for optimal near and further-term performance.

Drew Schardt, Hamilton Lane

SFOs allocating to PE/Venture

A real treat, we have four single family office folks joining us for this moderated roundtable where they will discuss how they allocate to private equity, with a focus on venture capital. Many (if not all) family offices owe their existence to a well-played venture play (aka the founder started a company that happened to succeed very well) and how they plan to replicate this ‘luck’, or not, will also emerge as topic of discussion between these seasoned investors.

Heading for The Exits – Unlocking value on the way out

Getting in can be easy, but making one’s way to the exit in a profitable manner can wreck havoc on a portfolio in any asset class: but especially privates. How one plans to cash out can affect timing, pricing, and complexity, as well as flexibility should circumstances change. This panel explains the options available to investors on both sides of the transaction: those selling and those who might be buying assets from a winding-down fund (or one that is selling for any reason). We’ll be sure to explain the many new vocab words as well, as these are new to some investors.

Start-Up Round-Up! – Family Offices/VCs

A ‘product extension’ of our Table Talks, the Start-Up Round-Up puts ~10 start-up founders at tables around the room – each one paired with an investor or two (VC or SFO).  The start-up runs through their pitch and the invited investors then offer some initial diligence questions to them in order to show the group how one can pierce the patina of a shiny deck to get at the meat of an offering, as well as how to discover the strengths and weaknesses of each idea and founder team (the latter to be ameliorated by sound advice from the investor!).

This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for all to hear some great ideas and get a glimpse into how investors in the space look at these opportunities.

Panel: Using TradFi to Access Crypto

All investment products live or die on acceptance and distribution.  Hedge funds, private equity, and private lending all moved from cottage industries to mainstream alternatives when the masses (or mass affluent, at least) gained access to them via products tailored to these investors and the distribution channels that service them.  Digital assets are no different, as evidenced by the success of Canada’s innovative, Big Board exchange listed offerings (including the first ETH staking ETF in the world) and the billions of dollars which flowed into U.S. BTC ETFs (and soon possibly into ETH ones).  This panel features three perspectives on their particular market segment.

Going to the Dark Side

Whenever someone from the asset-owner (e.g., pension or single family office) or asset-allocator (e.g., consultant) moves to the asset manager side, people start to ponder their motivations.  It could be the lovely lucre on offer, but that can only get one so far.  Positive externalities of being in an owner/allocator chair include: invites vs. paying to speak on panels, comp travel (as allowed by ethics/regs), and being at the apex of the ecosystem.  Moving to asset management is, thus, a big deal and digital assets (inter alia) have been a growing destination for owner/allocator professionals.  This panel will tell the stories of two individuals who made the move.

Allocators Weigh in on Digital Assets

Whether one is an asset-owner or an asset allocator, taking a position in a new asset class or investment idea/security can be harrowing.  Failing conventionally is a career non-destruction tactic – moreso than succeeding unconventionally might be a career advancer.  Thus, when a move is made it is after a great deal of thought about not only the opportunity but also the potential downside.  For pensions and more public investors (such as MFOs) this can include reputation risk and at SFOs it’s either one’s family money or the money of one’s employer – either way, a misstep might not be widely known, but it has consequences.

NowTalk – The Alts Landscape in Canada and Globally

Welcome to Alts-Land. In this NowTalk, Preqin will give a succinct briefing of alternatives in Canada and the world – with an emphasis on how far we have come in alts allocations and where they may be headed over the next few years (if we follow the massive growth seen in other markets). This presentation will have some great talking points for discussion with clients who see alternatives as just that, and not required for a well-balanced portfolio.

Joseph Borda, Preqin

NowTalk – What I Learned in 17 Years in the Business

Craig’s many TV appearances, “Alternative Investments” on BNN/Bloomberg, coupled with his prolific speaking schedule makes him a known entity to clients/prospects and industry folks alike. Always with a witty analog and anecdote to illustrate a point, his incisive mind is seemingly always concocting ways to translate industry-speak to something that investors can understand. Join us for this session that will chronicle his life as an IA and how he built his persona within the bounds of IIROC requirements.

Mainstreeting Private Investments

Should Main Street have access to the opportunities presented to ‘more sophisticated’ (read: wealthier) investors? For years, one could not even seriously ask this question as the products and structures were just not available. Now we can ask it, and get the answers from our panel: one that will look into the benefits and potential pitfalls of private investments in the hands of retail investors and how IAs can make the most of these platforms & funds.

NowTalk – Liquid Alts Primer

James and his CAASA co-founder Caroline were at ground zero when the initial Liquid Alts legislation was proposed in March 2013 and watching to go through town-halls, committee meetings, and CSA task force meetings and deliberations was seemingly glacial (it was promulgated in January, 2019) but the results were worth it. James will give a (thankfully) brief timeline of the process, the legislation as it stands now, its purpose when proposed and if it hit the mark, and where this growing part of the alts industry might be headed in the next few years.

James Burron, CAASA

3:15 pm

Alts That can Outperform

Alts can go through cycles and each one has its own merits and potential place in an investor portfolio, and knowing these factors is very important as IAs allocate to these asset classes and sub-sectors. This panel will provide insight into how advisors can do diligence on managers and allocate client assets to them.

Single Family Office Roundtable (Relatives Only)

Life as the principal of a family office can be exciting, inspirational, and busy, while at the same time worrisome, stressful, and draining.  We provide this (strictly!) family members only dinner as an opportunity to meet with your peers and share questions, concerns, solutions, and insights across the table. We have nominated three leaders/instigators to get things going and guarantee that all will find the evening illuminating and fun.

SFO Relatives Instigators (3 total):
Jamie Biddle, Verdis Investment Management
John Hynes, HedgeFacts

2:00 pm

Single Family Office Roundtables (Professionals Only)

Working in a single family office is not your typical investment management job – you gain the benefit of a sometimes extremely flat organizational structure and many find the spectrum of duties and tasks to be (very) intellectually stimulating. On the other hand, it can be isolating and difficult to keep up with the pace of work: each family has its own dynamic and cadence so we created this dinner where (strictly!) full time employees (not relatives) of SFOs can interact with their peers to get the most out of their roles.

SFO Professionals Instigators (3 per room)

John Hynes, Hedgefacts

Wheat From the Chaff: Manager due diligence

There are thousands of managers in the alts landsacpe – some might even think that they have seen them all…until they find dozens more at a new event or database. This session will show new and veteran family office professionals and their families a framework of categorizing, diligencing, and choosing managers which have the best probability to perform according to the needs of the families’ beneficiaries.

Private Markets in Transition

Private markets have been all the rage for many years with PE and then venture coming to the fore in retail-friendly wrappers and terms (even if they are at odds with how the industry would traditionally package them). Secondaries have evolved from PE to real estate and now infrastructure secondary funds (designed with the feature/bug that they buy more mature positions and are able to offer better liquidity terms to investors) in very quick succession (the latter of the three offered seemingly just after people started musing about it. Platform proliferation has made accessing these funds easier than ever and allowed capital to flow virtually unhindered into this space. What’s next? This panel will discuss just that.

Drew Colaiezzi, McPike Global Family Office
Nima Sanajian, Wealthsimple

9:30 am

Non-correlated Ideas

Diversification is touted as the Holy Grail of investing – but one must choose their portfolio constituents wisely. 79 of the NASDAQ 100 constituents are in the S&P 500. Equity and bond indices generally correlate – especially in crisis situations. Even hedge funds and other sectors like real estate can correlate when crowded trades or macro factors align to take them down. Where can an investor find solace? Possibly in the offerings of these three panelists: one’s employer has a plethora of non-correlated products on offer (Sagard), one has a fund that is correlated to the EM index which is, itself, a diversifier to other assets and strategies (Letko Brosseau), and the third has digital assets at its core (3iQ Corp).

Getting to G10

We have hosted numerous sessions where families and their professionals blue sky ideas on how to make their family office run better – but, as with most things, it comes down to people (this is the good and bad news). At the end of the day, G+1 or 2 or 3 will pass on and their legacy will be in the hands of the next generations. Now, one can live a lifestyle exclusive of worry about the next generation, but many believe that they’d like their progeny to do at least as well as they did. The math is difficult, though…exponential beneficiary growth meets arithmetic portfolio growth; and add to that missteps that the guardians of the hoard might make and ‘getting to G10’ can seem a gargantuan task. This panel will show you all sides of this conundrum and give you actionable tasks to make your heirs better off.

Martin Lueck: Delivering non-correlated, liquid alpha for decades

Mr. Lueck may not be known to all – his forte is discovering and exploiting trading opportunities and longer-term price trends that can create value for his many investors. His experience stretches about 40 years and his namesake first big win (AHL Fund, wherein he is the ‘L’) along with his current company (Aspect Capital) continue to be beacons of performance and innovation for the industry. Plase join us in this perhaps once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear his story and how he has managed to provide returns for investors in all markets as well as create and build relatinonships with investors over the years.

Martin Lueck, Aspect Capital Limited
Nancy Bertand,
 Citi Private Bank, Canada

1:30 pm

How much Alpha is enough? How many yachts?

Family offices are unique: they are a compilation of the family members (usually the founder/G1 is the main driving force behind this, but more mature families have successive generations represented in the Investment Committee) and their professional (non-related) staff. Unlike more institutionalised roles, that of an SFO professional is usually more dependent on the preferences of the beneficiaries involved in the process vs the process itself. This can be liberating (only one politic to worry about) or not (overbearance). Then there are the expectations, which this panel will focus on. Both of our speakers work for an involved G1 and their progeny (to an extent) and other advisors/professionals – but the expectations of them are very different. This will be an interesting illustration of how families of the same vintage can differ!

Total Portfolio Allocation

Every once in a while there is an epochal change in how things are done. One can observe an industry for years, piecing together many participants’ actions, before stepping back to see what the mosaic illustrates. The Total Portfolio Approach is one of those paradigm-changing (or shifting) mindsets. Institutional investors always seek additional alpha or risk-adjusted return, or (to be simple) ways to deliver value (e.g., retirement income) to their beneficiaries. The Maple Model is another example of this – but it is almost impossible to implement for smaller (<$10 billion) investors. The panel will explain the TPA and how it can be implemented by other investors to help them reach their lone-term goals.

Attendees are encouraged to read ahead prior to the event by perusing (or at least scanning) this CAIA paper on the topic [link].
