Future of Staking: An Investable Security?

Just a few years ago, or perhaps a few months ago, or even a few weeks ago, many in this room may not have known what staking is. But now, it is as important to be up to speed on with regard to digital assets as knowledge of battery technology would be for those investing in EV companies. It is a driver for how these investments actually work, and are a crucial part of the infrastructure of these proof of stake digital assets. This panel is going to explain how the space works and how investors can profit from this.

Eric Richmond, Coinsquare

11:45 am

Institutional Grade Crypto

This is an age-old question when it comes to pretty much any investment. Is this digital asset space one that people should lock up their money in and think of it as a long-term bet, or something that they should be actively trading in order to avoid the pitfalls of a very dynamic market.

To be honest, this is a question endemic to all investments. Most would agree that real estate should be long-term, but many engage in trading new, including options on new builds, and can turn a pretty penny doing that as well. The same goes for stocks and bonds where the dichotomy between active trading, which may involve shorting, and long-term by and hold, which is about as old as a hills. How does this affect digital assets and how should investors be positioning their portfolios? This panel will talk about that and more!

12:30 am

Lunch & Keynote

Ian Morley has been an investor for more than 50 years and, as one might guess, has an opinion about many areas in the investment sphere (and many others as well!). In this keynote we will look back on what issues and hurdles the Hedge Fund industry experienced over 30 years ago and how Digital Assets are facing the same political hurdles and the opposition coming from traditional finance. As well as giving us his views on the geo-political world and how he has adapted his portfolio.

Ian Morley, Wentworth Hall Consultancy Ltd
Sue Ennis, Hut 8 Mining

Now Talk – Unlocking New Horizons: Tokenization and digital assets within regulatory frameworks

Emerging technologies are reshaping the landscape of investment portfolios and activities while ensuring adherence to regulatory frameworks — particularly blockchain — can serve as the foundation for regulatory compliance with these alternative opportunities. This talk will delve into the benefits of tokenization including: enhanced liquidity, reduced friction, and increased accessibility to previously inaccessible asset classes, while emphasizing the pivotal role of blockchain technology in establishing regulatory compliance.

Vincent Kadar, Polymath

2:00 pm

NowTalk – A Review of the Investment Case for Crypto

Although Bitcoin was explicitly created to be an inflation hedge (among other things), investors naturally denominated BTC and other digital assets in fiat (usually USD) currency in order to have a frame of reference.  There are Bitcoin Maximalists that purport that BTC should be the coin of the realm but until that time we will continue to denominate all assets in fiat and compare their returns in that base currency.  This leads to the next question: are digital assets a good investment?  That can be answered positively if it produces a return stream (aka price performance) that is superior on a risk-adjusted basis and/or offers correlation benefits compared to other assets.  Even a low or negative-return security can be beneficial for a portfolio if its correlation is advantageous; and a high-returning asset can be a detriment if its downside correlation (that is, it loses value when other assets do) is greater than its upside correlation.  This talk will delve into this data to find out if digital assets are suitable options for investors.

Shaun Cumby, Virgo Asset Management

2:30 pm

NowTalk- Crypto Venture: Worth the risk?

Basically all crypto investing is venture but not all venture investing includes crypto. For investors looking at the space, is crypto/blockchain investing at this stage worth the risk and how might the performance of these investments pay off in the future…and how much do these scenarios rely upon price action of cryptocurrencies like ETH? These points and more will be discussed in this illuminating talk!

NowTalk – Lessons from FTX: The Cost of Ignoring ODD

Everyone should know what FTX is, its so called business plan, as well as the execution of it has been a thing of Senate hearings, and likely a book from Michael Lewis in the next little while. The interesting question is how did it get to be where it was? It had sophisticated institutional investors seemingly drop the ball when it came to diligence but venture is fraught with risk. What is simply because venture capital is inherently risky without a way to mitigate losses? Is this something that given the law of large numbers one might expect to happen at some point? Or is there some universal way that investors can protect themselves from these types of scenarios? This panel will look into that and more!

What of the 40?

What of the 40?

Overview

Everyone refers to the 60/40 (equity/bonds) asset allocation as set in stone – studies revel in its efficacy and investment committees see it as a North Star (why would you veer?) in terms of at least initial allocations. But what is its origin and how will it perform for investors going forward?

This presentation and panel discussion will speak to this as well as how a new idea – replacing the bond allocation with something else – can quite possibly be the only thing that prudent investors should seriously consider when deciding initial and on-going allocations.

Origin Story of Blockchain/BTC/Crypto

Ever wonder where crypto/digital assets came from? Why was it invented and has it fulfilled its purpose – or will it? These questions and more are covered in this session which delves deep into the origin story of digital assets and gives a peek as to where it might be headed.

Shaun Cumby, Arxnovum Investments Inc.
Kerem Kolcuoglu, Penrose Partners
Koleya Karringten, Canadian Blockchain Consortium

10:00 am

Use cases of Tokens/Coins (ETH)

Many believe that all coins/tokens/digital assets are cryptocurrencies, but while Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency (and even that is up for debate from some), other digital assets such as Ethereum (or Ether, or ETH) are more new-fangled, distributed computers that can have many uses. This talk will set things straight in the audience’s minds and set the stage for the next level of learning.

Kerem Kolcuoglu, Penrose Partners
Russell Starr, Valour
Jonathan Han, VirgoCX Wealth

11:00 am

Custody & Staking

An investor’s most important question (above risk/volatility and even return) is ‘where is my money?’…aka return of capital. In the digital assets world, ownership is established on the blockchain, but translating this to the TradFi (Traditional Finance) world can be a challenge. Thankfully, we have a panel that will ameliorate this situation and help attendees get comfortable with digital assets custody.

Freddie Allen, Coinbase
Kirk Emery, Figment

12:00 pm

Luncheon Workshop – CAASA NFT & Your Wallet

Mitch will walk the uninitiated (and those who might just be new to metaverse) through the simple steps to create a digital wallet – to which you can upload the coveted CAASA SuperWeek22 NFT (!).

Mitch Nicholson, Garden City Advisory Inc

1:00 pm

Crypto Regulatory Battles – Here are Your Winners

Following on from custody, regulation is a big deal in any industry and those (who are progressive) in the digital assets space are quickly getting up the curve on regulations – just as regulators are educating themselves about these new assets. This is your opportunity to hear the stories of how key players in the industry have made great strides in bridging the gap and received approval for their products/services.

Fred Pye, 3iQ Digital Asset Management
Lisa Durnford, Wealthsimple Crypto
Didier Lavallee, Tetra Trust Company

2:00 pm

Partnership in digital assets: How institutional managers collaborate with a regulated custodian

Learn how an institutional wealth manager can partner with a regulated trading and custody provider to offer digital asset solutions to their clients. Listen to how technology, innovation and agile thinking can open new thinking and opportunities for institutional money managers in the digital assets space.

Paul Stapleton, Fidelity Clearing Canada
John Davitsky, Echelon Wealth Partners

3:00 pm

NFT & The Metaverse

Highlighting the speed of change in the industry, last year’s Bootcamp only touched on NFTs and we had our first speaker on the Metaverse – and now both of these are much more mainstream. Many struggle with what these innovations could possibly mean for their businesses and personal/consumer life and this session is designed to answer those questions and more!

Breakfast Keynote

The transition from TradFi to the digital assets world is difficult for some, but for others it’s seen as more of a brand-new area to apply their experience and expertise to a fledgling industry. This can create conditions ripe for profit exploitation as well as the opportunity to work with regulators to create, rather than the trial and error that might have happened in TradFi over the last many years, legislation that fits the industry best – and from the start. Hear from someone who has gone from the pinnacle of financial services to a leading role in digital assets and learn where both industries are headed.

Zoe Cruz, Menai Financial Group
Koleya Karringten, Canadian Blockchain Consortium

9:30 am

PE/VC – Allocating in Today’s Market

For years, private equity investors have been chanting the mantra of ‘dry powder’ and ‘sky-high valuations’ while venture investors have been echoing the latter, but with a more invested portfolio (save cash earmarked for follow-ons). Now that some of the wind has been knocked out of a few markets, is this a good time to invest? Most know the inherent and unassailable benefits of vintage diversification in privates, but what are the macro trends that might propel this year’s crop of PE and VC transactions into the plus (or plus-plus!) column when one looks back on them in 5-10 years time?

Bulls & Bears – Key events of 2022

2022 has been a busy year thus far – and it’s not over yet! Unlimited upside at the beginning of the year was replaced by a Crypto Winter in the spring/summer and who knows where we will end up as we head into 2023. Well, this panel might have some idea. Join us to hear their views on the year and what the rest of it might bring.

Digital Assets – a serious asset class

Savvas Michael Mallas is a Partner for Family Office at Stonehage Fleming, one of the largest independent multi-family offices in the world. He heads up the firms Digital Asset Offering, supporting clients around the world who wish to introduce digital assets into their personal and fiduciary structures.

He shares his insights into the examples of the risk based approach which he has supported clients in approaching the asset class, and treating digital assets as any other asset, with the same discipline towards risk. In doing so he has been able to support clients in investing in so many different kinds of digital assets from blockchain, NFTs, early stage tokens and funds.

Savvas Mallas, Stonehage Fleming

4:45 pm

Institutions Allocating to Crypto

Everyone is doing it, but no one is talking about it…or is it the other way ’round? Crypto has been a salacious subject of late as the cryptocurrencies/tokens have dropped in price and some rather high-profile bankruptcies have plagued the headlines; adding even more trepidation for investors who might see its adoption and perhaps eventual domination of their portfolio/thinking. No matter the motivation, crypto has become (for some) a four letter word, even for true adherents who value its investment case almost as much as they value their role in the organization; and for naysayers, these ‘fluctuations’ have seemingly proved their earlier points. This talk will centre around how investors are wading through the bad news and making up their minds on allocations to these assets going forward.

Allocating to Private Equity Fireside

This fireside brings together two experienced allocators who will explain their views of the private equtiy markets and what investors can expect in the next while, based on their respective vantage points, observations, and assumptions. Which stage of the economy and how this affects private equity (and the associated de-coupling that can occur) will also be discussed (paper of one of the participants here) as well as where and how they are positioning their portfolios for optimal near and further-term performance.

Drew Schardt, Hamilton Lane
Jason Campbell, Eckler Investment Consulting

9:45 am

SFOs allocating to PE/Venture

A real treat, we have four single family office folks joining us for this moderated roundtable where they will discuss how they allocate to private equity, with a focus on venture capital. Many (if not all) family offices owe their existence to a well-played venture play (aka the founder started a company that happened to succeed very well) and how they plan to replicate this ‘luck’, or not, will also emerge as topic of discussion between these seasoned investors.

Heading for The Exits – Unlocking value on the way out

Getting in can be easy, but making one’s way to the exit in a profitable manner can wreck havoc on a portfolio in any asset class: but especially privates. How one plans to cash out can affect timing, pricing, and complexity, as well as flexibility should circumstances change. This panel explains the options available to investors on both sides of the transaction: those selling and those who might be buying assets from a winding-down fund (or one that is selling for any reason). We’ll be sure to explain the many new vocab words as well, as these are new to some investors.

Luncheon Keynote – Avoiding Lemons – Institutional Opportunities in the Cryptoasset Space

1:30 pm

Start-Up Round-Up! – Family Offices/VCs

A ‘product extension’ of our Table Talks, the Start-Up Round-Up puts ~10 start-up founders at tables around the room – each one paired with an investor or two (VC or SFO).  The start-up runs through their pitch and the invited investors then offer some initial diligence questions to them in order to show the group how one can pierce the patina of a shiny deck to get at the meat of an offering, as well as how to discover the strengths and weaknesses of each idea and founder team (the latter to be ameliorated by sound advice from the investor!).

This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for all to hear some great ideas and get a glimpse into how investors in the space look at these opportunities.

When

Insurance-Linked Securities – Uber-Diversifiers

Investors are constantly seeking assets and strategies that can reduce volatility in most scenarios and market regimes – especially if their asset base is intended to provide income over the short to moderate term (e.g., mature DB plans and endowments) since volatility is more a friend of accumulation plans. Insurance-Linked Securities (or ILSs) have very few connections to the vagaries of the capital markets, making them well-proven diversifiers. This panel will discuss their efficacy in a portfolio, the various types that can be employed, and how investors should perform diligence on the options presented.

Michael Nicks, Pepperdine University Endowment
John Butler, Cohen & Co.
Eugene Dimitriou, Farsight Partners
Ben Fox, Members Capital Management

Opportunities & Challenges in Real Estate & Infrastructure

Tremendous returns have been made in real estate and infrastructure for many investors over the last many decades – and some would say that this area provides the best opportunity going forward for virtually all investors and especially those whose time horizon is appropriately long.  This panel will provide insight into opportunities that might fit many investor portfolios as well as the challenges that might present themselves when investing in them and other similar securities/offerings.

Sandy Polkar,
 Firm Capital Corporation
Aleks Karamarkovic, Graywood Developments

Rates, Recession, and Recoveries: How three Rs affect private credit

Private credit has grown from a cottage industry providing a link between off-market investors and borrowers to being integral parts of some of the largest financial supermarkets/platforms on the planet.  As more capital has flowed to this previous backwater, participants’ (borrowers, lenders, and investors/LPs) sophistication has increase commensurately in many cases.  As such, macro-economic factors such as the health of the economy can lead to macro-prudential issues: rising rates siphons money from the borrowers (since most are floating rate notes), a recession can crimp revenues and profitability, and recoveries (which have been robust but might be worsened by the aforementioned) might hamper returns to investors. This panel will test the efficacy of private lending portfolios in today’s economy.

Keynote Fireside: Families’ Use of Private Market Investments

Keynote will begin at 12:15PM

Family offices are not only quiet, they also don’t stand still for long. Even upon establishment, the purpose of these entities might remain the same, but how it achieves its goals can evolve over time. Asset mix, use of internal and external resources, and the composition of personnel put to the task (such as family members vs number of ‘hired guns’) will vary over time as efficacy and cost constraints fluctuate. This panel features two veterans of the business – both with their unique perspectives on family offices and how they use private market opportunities to fulfill their individual mandates.

Trevor Maunder, Peerage Capital
Nancy Bertrand, Citi Private Bank

1:00 pm

One-on-one meetings & Refresher

Or one might call it ‘recess’ – a time where all attendees can meet with whomever they like (possibly facilitated by the conference app).  CAASA staff are on hand to help folks find one another, but should not be relied upon to ‘book up one’s day’ or provide concierge service at the conference – but we are happy to help members meet/identify folks on an ad hoc basis.

Have Secondaries Lost their Lustre?

Every once in a while an idea gains great traction and it’s only a matter of time before a segment of the population calls it ‘a bubble’ or ‘ripe for a fall’ – but in a number of cases it is a secular and persistent change that led to its adoption. Have Secondaries, which have been an investor darling for years because of their instant vintage diversification, portfolio approach, and potentially well-priced entry points, reached their zenith? This panel will talk to where these investments will go from here.

Nima Sanajian, Wealthsimple
Giovanni Fracchia, LGT Capital Partners
Ben Keen, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP

2:30 pm

Portfolio Snapshots of Three Allocators

Where is the ‘smart money’? Each investor has its own asset mix, set of liabilities and investment requirements, and level of sophistication. In this panel, all will hear from three allocators who have various levels to private market exposure in their portfolios – their reasons for privates, how they source transactions or fund managers, and where they see the sector headed for the balance of the 2020s. This should be an entertaining view of the alts and private markets landscape!

Rooting out Value: The why and how of farmland

Perhaps the world’s oldest investment, farmland has proved to be a winner for generations of landed gentry, hard-scrambling pioneers/sod-busters, and today’s family farms.  They were the focus of many documentaries and movies in the 1970s when inflation reared its head in earnest last but have been eclipsed by other investments like commodities, condos, and cryptocurrencies of late.  Is farmland the next leader in an inflation-hedged portfolio?  And if so, how can investors make the most of this exposure?  This panel will brief everyone on this and offer a way forward to invest in the space.

Panel: Using TradFi to Access Crypto

All investment products live or die on acceptance and distribution.  Hedge funds, private equity, and private lending all moved from cottage industries to mainstream alternatives when the masses (or mass affluent, at least) gained access to them via products tailored to these investors and the distribution channels that service them.  Digital assets are no different, as evidenced by the success of Canada’s innovative, Big Board exchange listed offerings (including the first ETH staking ETF in the world) and the billions of dollars which flowed into U.S. BTC ETFs (and soon possibly into ETH ones).  This panel features three perspectives on their particular market segment.

Going to the Dark Side

Whenever someone from the asset-owner (e.g., pension or single family office) or asset-allocator (e.g., consultant) moves to the asset manager side, people start to ponder their motivations.  It could be the lovely lucre on offer, but that can only get one so far.  Positive externalities of being in an owner/allocator chair include: invites vs. paying to speak on panels, comp travel (as allowed by ethics/regs), and being at the apex of the ecosystem.  Moving to asset management is, thus, a big deal and digital assets (inter alia) have been a growing destination for owner/allocator professionals.  This panel will tell the stories of two individuals who made the move.

Allocators Weigh in on Digital Assets

Whether one is an asset-owner or an asset allocator, taking a position in a new asset class or investment idea/security can be harrowing.  Failing conventionally is a career non-destruction tactic – moreso than succeeding unconventionally might be a career advancer.  Thus, when a move is made it is after a great deal of thought about not only the opportunity but also the potential downside.  For pensions and more public investors (such as MFOs) this can include reputation risk and at SFOs it’s either one’s family money or the money of one’s employer – either way, a misstep might not be widely known, but it has consequences.

Rahul Mehta (SFO)
