Single Family Office Roundtable (Relatives Only)

Life as the principal of a family office can be exciting, inspirational, and busy, while at the same time worrisome, stressful, and draining.  We provide this (strictly!) family members only dinner as an opportunity to meet with your peers and share questions, concerns, solutions, and insights across the table. We have nominated three leaders/instigators to get things going and guarantee that all will find the evening illuminating and fun.

Evelyne Massa, Group RMC
Daniel Stow, Zen Capital and Mergers

6:00 pm

Single Family Office Roundtable (Professionals Only)

Working in a single family office is not your typical investment management job – you gain the benefit of a sometimes extremely flat organizational structure and many find the spectrum of duties and tasks to be (very) intellectually stimulating. On the other hand, it can be isolating and difficult to keep up with the pace of work: each family has its own dynamic and cadence so we created this dinner where (strictly!) full time employees (not relatives) of SFOs can interact with their peers to get the most out of their roles.

Breakfast & Keynote (8:30am) – Domiciling Your Digital Assets

There is no denying that digital assets have created a great deal of wealth for a growing number of investors and maths/coding enthusiasts – but how can families ensure that, like all of their assets, they are in the right domiciles and structures to ensure they have the most advantageous tax and legal treatment? This chat will cover a (real life) case study of this sort of situation from an expert in the field.

NowTalk – Easy Alpha – Class Action Services

Every investor knows that we are in a litigious world and securities settlements are growing each year as classes of security-holders seek relief via the courts. Obtaining a judgement is only part of the process, though. One must prove their holding and file their paperwork in a prescribed manner by the due date in order to receive their due amounts. Class action services specialize in ensuring maximum benefit, for a contingency fee. They can also uncover monies otherwise unknown to investors by surveying their portfolio for relevant tickers and holding periods.

Bob Williamson, Battea Class Action Services

9:30 am

Real Estate for Good

Possibly the oldest investment, real estate has long provided a roof over one’s head, and a place to work, play, and shop/etc. One drawback is the incredible amount of energy and carbon-producing materials and processes that are required for its construction and maintenance. This panel investigates the many ways that we can make use of this essential asset while ameliorating its potential negatives

Private Lending has grown immensely over the last few years – not least because of low interest rates, but also with a growing openness of regulators to provide vehicles active in this area and investors coming to understand the risks and returns on offer in these securities. Our learned panel will illuminate some lesser-known areas as well as mainstream sectors that deserve attention.

Lunch & Keynote (12:45 start) – Canadian MFO Evolution

The creation of centralized concerns providing a range of services to family offices (aka multi-family offices) many decades ago allowed certain families to gain access to opportunities and expertise that they could not have discovered nor financed perhaps on their own. It also created a cousin-class of professionals to those working in single family offices – ones who can see across various dynasties with unique and varied needs and synthesize solutions tailored to types of families and also to each one individually. As prosperous families grow in number, they seek out those with the ability to provide counsel just as those doing so are proliferating. This talk will discuss the state of advice today and where it is headed.

NowTalk – Making an Impact (In More Ways than One)

ESG investing is a hot topic (no pun intended) and unlike institutional investors that are investing a beneficiary’s monies, families are putting their own capital to work and many really, really care about where it goes and what it does in terms of their core values. There is a real passion here by many family members to ensure they do well and invest well and this talk will present one manager’s view on how to achieve laudable goals.

So-called alt-alts are outside of the typical public and private equities or debt instruments and assets such as real estate. They are taking a unique tack as they navigate the investment landscape. NowTalk – Arbing Crypto

Over the last few months you may have come across many of the areas of investment in digital assets. This talk focuses on crypto-currencies, coins, and tokens as well as DeFi platforms where these investments can become more than simply buy and HODL assets. This talk will delve into these opportunities and get everyone up on this new-new thing.

Families Allocating to VC

Many families owe their fortune to a dedicated trail-blazer who staked their claim in a new industry – or invented one! Today’s start-up founders have similar dreams of providing a service to a growing market, creating well-paying jobs, and delivering true value to everyone around them; all while (possibly) creating multi-generational wealth. Before this can be done, however, they need capital to make their ideas come to life – and that could be where successful families come into the picture. This panel provides the insight and opinions of experienced VCs in various niches on how families can ensure the catch the next waves of innovation.

Lunch & Keynote – A Fireside chat with Senia Rapisarda and Marie-Claude Boisvert

Every market goes through turbulence from time to time and private equity and venture capital are not immune. Markets and investors have vacillated between FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) and FOGA (Fear Of Getting Annihilated) in the last two years or so but, as the saying goes: this too shall pass. Join us for a fireside chat with two titans of the industry whose longitudinal view of these markets will provide insightful perspective for all attendees – not to mention the opportunity to hear their views on what investors should be doing now to position their portfolios for the next market phase.

NowTalk – ODD: Obstacles to yes

Sophisticated investors leave no stone unturned when it comes to finding opportunities. Sometimes that involves lengthy plane trips to far-off places to meet with investors, managers, and even target companies. Other times, it involves hiring either local folks in another jurisdiction or sending their people across the globe to live in a target country. This panel will talk about some of the advantages and disadvantages of spending the globe for one’s investment portfolio.

Esther Zurba, Castle Hall Dilligence

3:30 pm

Principal Investors Discuss Venture Capital

Venture teams such as those at single family offices and pension plans each have their unique way of looking at the world and investment opportunities, which might be presented to them. When it comes to venture capital, this is possibly even more true, because, especially in the case of family offices, the patriarch/matriarch are still firmly in control, The families have in-depth knowledge in a few industries, such as the ones that they may have made a fortune in. Pension plans’ team composition obviously is a determining factor in their ability to source, diligence, transact, and exit deals over what might be many years. This panel will illustrate some of those preferences in action, and how these principal investors access venture, through funds, and with direct or co-investment transactions.

Overview

We are happy to bring our 2022 Family Office Summit to you in-person at Vantage Venues in Toronto where we will bring together speakers and participants from single and multi-family offices, investment dealers, Canadian and global investment management houses, and affiliated service providers.

We are now SOLD OUT! Capacity is strictly limited to 200 attendees.

We have four days of content + more for all involved!

All students are asked to provide detailed information on their academic progress and work experience as well as a cover letter. These will be provided to all sponsoring members who will reach out to schedule an interview or additional information session.

All sponsors will have a dedicated slot that interested (or just curious!) students and grads should use as their opportunity to learn about the company, what it does, and its culture – in addition to online and other research and inquiries. Students and grads are greatly encouraged to use this time to, as appropriate, pose questions to the employers to better understand their business and culture as well as the roles that they may have open at that time or in the future.

In addition to the info sessions, a selection of topics will be discussed by industry leaders (including one of our famous Career Panels!) designed to be informative and illuminating for students/grads and employers alike.

If participants have additional ideas or comments on the agenda and format, we are happy to hear it so we can look to incorporate it into our 2023 edition!

On top of his experience as an assistant professor, options trader, hedge fund industry writer (he wrote the book on it!), and alternative investment consulting, he found (like so many) that the CAIA designation is a perfect pairing for those entering into or making their name in alts. Now, heading the (Financial Data Professional) FDP Institute, he is taking on bridging the (alternative) data and alternative investment industry. Learn how these two designations can amp up your resume and knowledge.

Future of Staking: An Investable Security?

Just a few years ago, or perhaps a few months ago, or even a few weeks ago, many in this room may not have known what staking is. But now, it is as important to be up to speed on with regard to digital assets as knowledge of battery technology would be for those investing in EV companies. It is a driver for how these investments actually work, and are a crucial part of the infrastructure of these proof of stake digital assets. This panel is going to explain how the space works and how investors can profit from this.

Charlie Morris, CMCC Global
Erina Penkovsky, Allnodes
Eric Richmond, Coinsquare
Didier Lavallee, Tetra Trust Company

11:45 am

Institutional Grade Crypto

This is an age-old question when it comes to pretty much any investment. Is this digital asset space one that people should lock up their money in and think of it as a long-term bet, or something that they should be actively trading in order to avoid the pitfalls of a very dynamic market.

To be honest, this is a question endemic to all investments. Most would agree that real estate should be long-term, but many engage in trading new, including options on new builds, and can turn a pretty penny doing that as well. The same goes for stocks and bonds where the dichotomy between active trading, which may involve shorting, and long-term by and hold, which is about as old as a hills. How does this affect digital assets and how should investors be positioning their portfolios? This panel will talk about that and more!

12:30 am

Lunch & Keynote

Ian Morley has been an investor for more than 50 years and, as one might guess, has an opinion about many areas in the investment sphere (and many others as well!). In this keynote we will look back on what issues and hurdles the Hedge Fund industry experienced over 30 years ago and how Digital Assets are facing the same political hurdles and the opposition coming from traditional finance. As well as giving us his views on the geo-political world and how he has adapted his portfolio.

Ian Morley, Wentworth Hall Consultancy Ltd
Sue Ennis, Hut 8 Mining

Now Talk – Unlocking New Horizons: Tokenization and digital assets within regulatory frameworks

Emerging technologies are reshaping the landscape of investment portfolios and activities while ensuring adherence to regulatory frameworks — particularly blockchain — can serve as the foundation for regulatory compliance with these alternative opportunities. This talk will delve into the benefits of tokenization including: enhanced liquidity, reduced friction, and increased accessibility to previously inaccessible asset classes, while emphasizing the pivotal role of blockchain technology in establishing regulatory compliance.

Vincent Kadar, Polymath

2:00 pm

NowTalk – A Review of the Investment Case for Crypto

Although Bitcoin was explicitly created to be an inflation hedge (among other things), investors naturally denominated BTC and other digital assets in fiat (usually USD) currency in order to have a frame of reference.  There are Bitcoin Maximalists that purport that BTC should be the coin of the realm but until that time we will continue to denominate all assets in fiat and compare their returns in that base currency.  This leads to the next question: are digital assets a good investment?  That can be answered positively if it produces a return stream (aka price performance) that is superior on a risk-adjusted basis and/or offers correlation benefits compared to other assets.  Even a low or negative-return security can be beneficial for a portfolio if its correlation is advantageous; and a high-returning asset can be a detriment if its downside correlation (that is, it loses value when other assets do) is greater than its upside correlation.  This talk will delve into this data to find out if digital assets are suitable options for investors.

Shaun Cumby, Virgo Asset Management

2:30 pm

NowTalk- Crypto Venture: Worth the risk?

Basically all crypto investing is venture but not all venture investing includes crypto. For investors looking at the space, is crypto/blockchain investing at this stage worth the risk and how might the performance of these investments pay off in the future…and how much do these scenarios rely upon price action of cryptocurrencies like ETH? These points and more will be discussed in this illuminating talk!

NowTalk – Lessons from FTX: The Cost of Ignoring ODD

Everyone should know what FTX is, its so called business plan, as well as the execution of it has been a thing of Senate hearings, and likely a book from Michael Lewis in the next little while. The interesting question is how did it get to be where it was? It had sophisticated institutional investors seemingly drop the ball when it came to diligence but venture is fraught with risk. What is simply because venture capital is inherently risky without a way to mitigate losses? Is this something that given the law of large numbers one might expect to happen at some point? Or is there some universal way that investors can protect themselves from these types of scenarios? This panel will look into that and more!

Origin Story of Blockchain/BTC/Crypto

Ever wonder where crypto/digital assets came from? Why was it invented and has it fulfilled its purpose – or will it? These questions and more are covered in this session which delves deep into the origin story of digital assets and gives a peek as to where it might be headed.

Kerem Kolcuoglu, Penrose Partners
Koleya Karringten, Canadian Blockchain Consortium

10:00 am

Use cases of Tokens/Coins (ETH)

Many believe that all coins/tokens/digital assets are cryptocurrencies, but while Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency (and even that is up for debate from some), other digital assets such as Ethereum (or Ether, or ETH) are more new-fangled, distributed computers that can have many uses. This talk will set things straight in the audience’s minds and set the stage for the next level of learning.

Kerem Kolcuoglu, Penrose Partners

11:00 am

Custody & Staking

An investor’s most important question (above risk/volatility and even return) is ‘where is my money?’…aka return of capital. In the digital assets world, ownership is established on the blockchain, but translating this to the TradFi (Traditional Finance) world can be a challenge. Thankfully, we have a panel that will ameliorate this situation and help attendees get comfortable with digital assets custody.

Crypto Regulatory Battles – Here are Your Winners

Following on from custody, regulation is a big deal in any industry and those (who are progressive) in the digital assets space are quickly getting up the curve on regulations – just as regulators are educating themselves about these new assets. This is your opportunity to hear the stories of how key players in the industry have made great strides in bridging the gap and received approval for their products/services.

Listen to how technology, innovation and agile thinking can open new thinking and opportunities for institutional money managers in the digital assets space.

NFT & The Metaverse

Highlighting the speed of change in the industry, last year’s Bootcamp only touched on NFTs and we had our first speaker on the Metaverse – and now both of these are much more mainstream. Breakfast Keynote

The transition from TradFi to the digital assets world is difficult for some, but for others it’s seen as more of a brand-new area to apply their experience and expertise to a fledgling industry. This can create conditions ripe for profit exploitation as well as the opportunity to work with regulators to create, rather than the trial and error that might have happened in TradFi over the last many years, legislation that fits the industry best – and from the start. Hear from someone who has gone from the pinnacle of financial services to a leading role in digital assets and learn where both industries are headed.

PE/VC – Allocating in Today’s Market

For years, private equity investors have been chanting the mantra of ‘dry powder’ and ‘sky-high valuations’ while venture investors have been echoing the latter, but with a more invested portfolio (save cash earmarked for follow-ons). Now that some of the wind has been knocked out of a few markets, is this a good time to invest? Most know the inherent and unassailable benefits of vintage diversification in privates, but what are the macro trends that might propel this year’s crop of PE and VC transactions into the plus (or plus-plus!) column when one looks back on them in 5-10 years time?

Digital Assets – a serious asset class

Savvas Michael Mallas is a Partner for Family Office at Stonehage Fleming, one of the largest independent multi-family offices in the world. He heads up the firms Digital Asset Offering, supporting clients around the world who wish to introduce digital assets into their personal and fiduciary structures.

He shares his insights into the examples of the risk based approach which he has supported clients in approaching the asset class, and treating digital assets as any other asset, with the same discipline towards risk. In doing so he has been able to support clients in investing in so many different kinds of digital assets from blockchain, NFTs, early stage tokens and funds.

Savvas Mallas, Stonehage Fleming

4:45 pm

Institutions Allocating to Crypto

Everyone is doing it, but no one is talking about it…or is it the other way ’round? Crypto has been a salacious subject of late as the cryptocurrencies/tokens have dropped in price and some rather high-profile bankruptcies have plagued the headlines; adding even more trepidation for investors who might see its adoption and perhaps eventual domination of their portfolio/thinking. No matter the motivation, crypto has become (for some) a four letter word, even for true adherents who value its investment case almost as much as they value their role in the organization; and for naysayers, these ‘fluctuations’ have seemingly proved their earlier points. This talk will centre around how investors are wading through the bad news and making up their minds on allocations to these assets going forward.

Which stage of the economy and how this affects private equity (and the associated de-coupling that can occur) will also be discussed (paper of one of the participants here) as well as where and how they are positioning their portfolios for optimal near and further-term performance.

SFOs allocating to PE/Venture

A real treat, we have four single family office folks joining us for this moderated roundtable where they will discuss how they allocate to private equity, with a focus on venture capital. Many (if not all) family offices owe their existence to a well-played venture play (aka the founder started a company that happened to succeed very well) and how they plan to replicate this ‘luck’, or not, will also emerge as topic of discussion between these seasoned investors.

Heading for The Exits – Unlocking value on the way out

Getting in can be easy, but making one’s way to the exit in a profitable manner can wreck havoc on a portfolio in any asset class: but especially privates. How one plans to cash out can affect timing, pricing, and complexity, as well as flexibility should circumstances change. This panel explains the options available to investors on both sides of the transaction: those selling and those who might be buying assets from a winding-down fund (or one that is selling for any reason). We’ll be sure to explain the many new vocab words as well, as these are new to some investors.

Start-Up Round-Up! – Family Offices/VCs

A ‘product extension’ of our Table Talks, the Start-Up Round-Up puts ~10 start-up founders at tables around the room – each one paired with an investor or two (VC or SFO).  The start-up runs through their pitch and the invited investors then offer some initial diligence questions to them in order to show the group how one can pierce the patina of a shiny deck to get at the meat of an offering, as well as how to discover the strengths and weaknesses of each idea and founder team (the latter to be ameliorated by sound advice from the investor!).

This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for all to hear some great ideas and get a glimpse into how investors in the space look at these opportunities.
