CAP YVR: Demystifying Family Offices 2025

Overview

Oct 1st from 12:30pm – 5pm

This afternoon event is designed to shed some light on the family office market – both for those who are working with (or aspire to) family offices and those who are part of these entities (either as family members/principals or full time professional staff).

Following an engaging luncheon keynote, two panels will feature a selection of multi-family offices and single-family offices who will delve into a number of topics of interest to virtually anyone in the audience.

Lunch time Fireside – Stewardship & Transition: What It Really Means to Work in a Family Office

Julian Carson, Vice President at JH Investments, has guided the Houssian family’s businesses and investments for over a decade. In this keynote, he shares how a family office evolves across generations, shaping governance, balancing operating companies with investments, and navigating succession. Julian will also reflect on the growing trend of professionals moving into the family office space, highlighting how life on the inside differs from traditional corporate or buy-side roles. Expect candid lessons, practical insights, and stories that reveal the unique challenges and opportunities of stewarding family wealth.

Advising Family Offices

Single Family Offices range in AUM amount, interest/investment in public v. private, fund v. direct, domestic v. foreign, and internal v. external managers, strategies, and asset classes to a mind-blowing degree. Thus, working with them is anything but cookie-cutter; those advisors and asset managers who might like to gain access to these amorphous asset owners need to know how to approach them, discuss investments and other matters, provide counsel, and effect implementation of their plan/offering. This panel will look into all this and more!

Getting to Know Family Offices

“If you’ve met one family office, you’ve met one family office,” or so the saying goes. The experience of many who have dealt with these entities is more akin to knowing 0.10 or 0.20 family offices, even after many years of interaction. The reality is many families are uber-private and, frankly, see no need or upside in broadcasting anything about themselves and their interests/tendancies. To be fair, they may not be fully aware of their underlying needs/interests until they see something that might fulfill them. This panel features a selection of (obviously) more open families who will tell something of their stories and provide insight into how outside providers can work with them and their peers.

Golf Day 2023

CAASA Annual Golf Day 2023

Featuring a Trip to Whitehorse, YK and many other great prizes!

Only 4 spots/ 1 foursome available!

Be a part of this impactful day!

Join us for a great day of golf, for a great cause: Blake Boultbee Youth Outreach Services, founded by Rod Cohen more than 34 years ago. He literally takes guns and their trigger-men (usually men…) off the streets thanks to his counselling skills.  He lives minutes away from the BBYOS ‘office’, which is a former crack house whose last owner he convinced would be put to better use under his direction, making him uniquely able to connect with the teens in his program.  It’s not just teens, though, one cannot ‘age out’ of his care and he is happy to work with anyone until they might no longer require it.
